The Habit

Today, we are surrounded buy tons of gadgets around us. When was the last time you wondered how a gadget that you use every works? Ever wonder how the metro train-our daily commute- is managed? Finding difficult to remember ...uh? Now, try to remember about you when you were in school. Do you agree that you used to ask lot of question then compared to now? I do.

One day, I too made this observation about myself and I think that why we are finding our engineering/medical or whatever education you are taking/took so dull. I think the answer is that 'we lost our curiosity'. Let's first try to know why is this important and later move on to why it is that important.

Like me, everyone loved Physics, history , art etc. in our school days. How fantastic were those days! I usually here people in IIT saying,"school me to kuch padhna hi nahi padta tha yaar!" The moment we moved our focus from learning a subject to scoring marks in entrance exam, making CV and getting a good job, we kind of start putting this 'curiosity' program a low priority level. (Sorry, that was too geeky !) The point is the subject which we are studying may be engineering, medical sciences or anything are founded by people who were thirsty to find answers to their own questions! Someone had thirst to know about our living in past and so he collected old manuscripts studied and calmed down his thirst. This gave birth to the history subject. Same goes for Newton in Physics, and scientists in medical sciences. Now, we are studying these subjects in totally different way! We literally 'forgot' about the motivation of subject and started studying for term exams and that has totally killed the 'thirst' component from subject. And when we totally miss the 'soul' of subject we really can't go along with it and start finding it boring. Agree? So, I thought, if somehow I bring back this component, it will solve lot of problems related to our dull education system.

So, how do I do it? Well, its very simple : start asking a question yourself a day. It means, make in your to ask a new curious question everyday related to gadgets, phenomena, news or anything everyday. Just keep your mind open 24 hours and decide not to sleep without asking and answering a curious question everyday. Sound simple? Well it's not. When I ask yourself:"did I ask myself anything today?" many times I have my answer as "no". However, its not difficult too. Start looking around you in free time (including when you are not paying attention to professor's lecture) and start asking 'how doe it work?' I'm sure your friend Google will try to satisfy you. Keep continuing for few days and someday you might find asking yourself similar question related to your syllabus. I'm sure you soon will realize that your book is not just a 'syllabus for exam' but a treasure of answers! Continue this and make this a habit!

Someone could blame our educational system and society for destroying our 'curiosity' but I don't agree completely. We too are part in that. The only reason behind loss of curiosity is not just the environment around you but your decision to change!

I would like to end with a quote from Interstellar movie :
"We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible. And we count these moments. These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that. Or perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers. And we've barely begun. And that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us."
